Studied at Trinity College Cambridge (senior operation, 1861). In the “’Varsity” eleven, played twice against Oxford. And for two years for his county (North ottinghamshire) eleven.

Guardian for Hazelbeach, 1868, and made Poor Law his subject, commencing in 1872 a reform in the union to which he belonged (Brixworth), which resulted in reducing the number of outdoor paupers from 1062 in 1872 to 16 in 1894. His policy upset by Local Government Acting, 1894, ceased to be chairman.
But in 1899 was elected chairman of the Doctorate. C., retired 1905.
Established a co-operative public house in Harleston. All the grocery and general business of the village is on same principle and under same management. Rector of Harleston, 1882-1907.
