He was elected Mayor of Newcastle for 1724 and 1737 and Member of Parliament for Newcastle in 1722 (sitting until 1727). He was defeated in the Parliamentary election of 1727 but returned on petition in 1729 (until 1734). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1727.
