William Cobb was born on October 20, 1937, in Demopolis; the son of Sledge Cobb and Inez (Land) Cobb. He had one sibling, a sister.
In 1956, William Cobb graduated from Demopolis High School. He earned his bachelor's degree at Livingston University in 1961 and a master's degree in creative writing at Vanderbilt University in 1963.
In 1963, William Cobb joined the faculty of the University of Montevallo as an English instructor and was promoted to an assistant professor. He remained on the faculty until his retirement in 2000.
Cobb published short stories, plays, and novels. Most of his works focus on racial strife. It also features Cobb's affinity for dark comedy and Southern gothic qualities.
His first novel, published in 1984, was Coming of Age at the Y. His most popularly accepted novel, A Walk Through Fire, was published in 1992 and explores racial tensions in the American South. Cobb's other books include The Hermit King, A Spring of Souls, Wings of Morning, and A Time to Reap. Cobb is also a noted playwright. He has written several plays, such as Sunday Child, A Place of Springs, Early Ruins and others. Three of these were produced off-Broadway in New York.
William's works are represented in various anthologies. He is also a contributor to periodicals, including Amaryllis, Arete, Orpheus, Story, Shenandoah, Southern Humanities Review, and Southern Living.
