(One of the most comforting forms of support you can give ...)
One of the most comforting forms of support you can give a person with cancer is the use of touch. This inspiring and authoritative program (DVD with illustrated manual) was developed as part of a research study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. It provides detailed instruction by leading experts in cancer support and oncology massage for safe and simple techniques anyone can learn and apply. The DVD (78 minutes) follows eleven patients and their caregivers through a workshop as they learn and practice the techniques together. Topics include safety precautions, positioning on home furniture (bed, sofa, chair at kitchen table), frame of mind, communication, and simple techniques for the head and face, neck, back and shoulders, hands, and feet. There is also instruction in acupressure for pain, anxiety and nausea. The illustrated manual (72 pages) follows the instruction of the DVD and also includes a Questions and Answers section. Research-based: This program was evaluated in home use with 97 adult cancer patients, 21 different types of cancer and all stages of disease. Caregivers included spouses, partners, friends, siblings, parents, and adult children. Participants were White, Black, Asian and Hispanic. Caregivers were able to significantly reduce distress in patients (pain, fatigue, stress/anxiety, depression, and nausea) by following the instruction provided in the program.
