In 1906 he was a mining engineer and assayer at the British Mining and Metal Company in Cornwall. During 1906-1909 he was appointed Engineer at the Syndicat du Yunnan and Manager in China during 1909-1912. He worked as a Director and Manager of Anglo-French China Corporation, Ltd. during 1912-1915.
