Called to Bar, Middle Temple, 1867. Went the Northern Circuit, 1867-1871. Jointauthor with late Sir Wemyss Reid of “Briefs and Papers.
Sketches of the Bar and the Press by Two Idle Apprentices,” 1872. Has contributed largely to magazines and newspapers. Was London Correspondent of the Indian Daily News, Calcutta, 1870-1893.
And is a Alembor of the Institute of Journalists. Has visited India, West Indies (twice) United States of America, Canada, South Africa, S. America, Egypt, Palestine, Syria, Iceland, and nearly every country in Europe. Secretary of the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom and of the General Shipowners’ Society, London, since 1880; of the Shipowners’ Parliamentary Committee since 1893, and of the Advisory Committee to the Board of Trade upon New Lighthouse Works since 1900.
