Served apprenticeship as engineer under Sir W. G. Armstrong and Company, Elswick. When 23 years old commenced business in partnership with his brother in Manchester as engineers. One of founders of Crossley Brothers, Ltd.
One of original Directors of Manchester Ship Canal Company. Chairman Manchester Hospitals for Consumption. Chairman of Crossley Sanatorium, Delamere.
Chairman Boys and Girls' Refuges, and Children’s Aid Society, Manchester. Made Freeman of City of Manchester, 1902. Justice of the Peace Manchester and Cheshire. 1st Baronet, cartulary-register 1909; Member of Parliament (Liberal) Altrincham Division, Cheshire, since 1906.
