he migrated to the U. S. when a youth, and some years later settled in San Francisco. In the latter part of Mayor Phelan’s administration Mr. Cuthbertson was appointed to the post of City Architect, and continued to serve in that capacity under Mayor Schmitz.
During the early eighties he practiced in association with the late William Curlett and Theodore Eisen, and under the firm name of Curlett, Eisen & Cuthbertson was identified with the design of a number of buildings in San Francisco, also helped in preparation of plans for the old Court House at Los Angeles, and a three-story brick hotel at Ventura. In 1890 Mr. Cuthbertson withdrew from the firm to associate with William Moser whose office was then in St. Anne’s Building at Eddy and Powell Streets, and several years later following the 1906 earthquake and fire he was active in reconstruction work, building many "flats" and apartments in the city.
