(Excerpt from Cave Hunting: Researches on the Evidence of ...)
Excerpt from Cave Hunting: Researches on the Evidence of Caves Respecting the Early Inhabitants of Europe The exploration of caves is rapidly becoming an im portant field of inquiry, and their contributions to our knowledge 'of the early history of the sojourn of men in Europe are daily increasing in value and in number. Since the year 1823, when Dr. Buckland published his famous work, the Reliquiae Diluvianae, no attempt has been made to correlate, and bring into the compass of one work, the crude mass of facts which have been recorded in nearly every country in Europe. In this volume I have attempted to bring the history of cave-exploration down to the knowledge of to-day, and to put its main conclusions before my readers in one connected and continuous narrative. Since Dr. Buckland wrote, the momentous discovery of human relics along with the extinct animals in caves and river deposits has revolutionised the current ideas as to the antiquity and condition of man; and works of art of a high order, showing a familiarity with nature and an aptitude for the delineation of the forms of animals by no means despicable, have been dis covered in the caves of Britain, France, Belgium, and Switzerland, that were the dwellings of the primeval European hunters of reindeer and mammoths. The discoveries in Kent's Hole and in the caves of Belgium led to those in the caves of Brixham and Wookey Hole. Cave-hunting published in 1874, I endeavoured to clear the way for the present enquiry into primaeval man, his growth in culture, his conditions of life, and his relation to history ;and I found it necessary to treat of cave-exploration in detail, before I could venture to grapple with the difficulties inherent in a work which treats of the borderland of geology, archaeology, and history. In dealing with them, I have to acknowledge my debt to the writings of Sir Charles Lyell, Sir John Lubbock, Mr. John Evans, Dr. Thurnam, and Mr. Franks in this country; to Professors Gaudry, Steenstrup, Capellini, and Drs. Broca, Virchow, Wiberg, Rutimeyer, Jorsyth Major on the Continent, as well as to many contributors to the scientific periodicals of France, Switzerland, I taly, and Germany, and more especially to the valuable memoirs in the Comptes Rendus du Congres International d Anthropologie et d Archeologie Prehistoriques. I have also used the materials accumulated in some of my own Essays published in the Edinburgh and Fortnightly Reviews, and in the Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society. archaeologist geologist scientist
Dawkins was born at Buttington Vicarage in Montgomeryshire on 26th of December, 1837. He attracted attention at age five by collecting fossils from the local colliery spoil heaps. Soon after, his family moved to Fleetwood in Lancashire,
Dawkins was educated at Rossall School in Lancashire and Jesus College in Oxford. He graduated with a second in Classics and a first in Natural Sciences.
On leaving Oxford University in 1862, he joined the Geological Survey of Great Britain and in 1869 became curator of the Manchester museum, a post which he retained till 1890.
He was appointed professor of geology and palaeontology in Owens College, Manchester, in 1874. He paid special attention to the question of the existence of coal in Kent, and in 1882 was selected by the Channel tunnel committee to make a special survey of the French and English coasts. He was also employed in the scheme of a tunnel beneath the Humber.
He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1867, and acted as president of the anthropological section of the British Association in 1882 and of the geological section in 1888.
His chief distinctions, however, were won in the realms of anthropology by his researches into the lives of the cave-dwellers of prehistoric times, labours which have borne fruit in his books Cave-hunting (1874); Early Man in Britain (1880); British Pleistocene Mammalia (1866–1887).
