William J. Diebold was born on October 5, 1958, in Nyack, New York, to William Diebold, an economist, and Ruth B. Diebold, a librarian.
In 1980, William J. Diebold received a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University. He also received a Master of Arts in 1981 and a Ph.D. in 1989 from Johns Hopkins University.
From 1984 to 1986, Diebold attended Ludwig-Maximilians Universität in Munich, Germany.
William was an intern in the manuscripts department and exhibition curator at J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California from 1986 to 1987. He then joined the staff of Reed College as a visiting assistant professor. In 1989 he was promoted to an assistant professor, then to an associate professor in 1993, and finally to a full professorship in 2001. In 2003 he became a Jane Neuberger Goodsell Professor of Art History and Humanities there, and holds this position by now.
William was also a speaker at educational institutions, including Princeton University, Northwestern University, University of the Arts in Philadelphia, the University of Texas at Austin, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon.
Diebold has also published extensively on early medieval topics, including his book Word and Image: An Introduction to Early Medieval Art.
