(A dmiral, Robert Blake, and in it the Naval History of En...)
A dmiral, Robert Blake, and in it the Naval History of England during one of its most brilliant periods, has not hitherto been written with either accuracy of outline or copiousness of detail. Readers of the Commonwealth annals know how prominent is his place in contemporary literature how many of his letters are preserved in Tlmrloe and other collectors how frequent are the references to him in the Journals of the House, in broadsides, pamphlets and the various newspapers. But even these sources of information have almost wholly escaped the attention of such writers as have formally undertaken his memoirs. The chief authority for such slight notices of Blake as appear in our Encyclopaedias and Biographical Dictionaries is an extremely meagre and incorrect memoir published in a work having the title Lives :E nglish and Foreign. 1704. It was on this foundation that Dr. Johnson based his spirited sketch for the Gentleman s Magazine. A fter-writers followed his lead; from the author of the article Blake in the Encyclopaedia Britannica the best and most copious of modern accounts down to Mr. Gorton, who wrote a memoir of twenty-four pages for the Useful Knowledge Society. Of these notices it is sufficient to say that, with one or two exceptions, the writers did not even trouble themselves to consult the Blake Correspondence inT (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology. Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Dixon was born on the 30th of June 1821, at Great Ancoats in Manchester. He was a member of an old Lancashire family. His father was Abner Dixon of Holmfirth and Kirkburton in the West Riding of Yorkshire, his mother Mary Cryer.
Beginning life as a clerk at Manchester, Dixon decided, in 1846, to take up literature as a career. After gaining some journalistic experience at Cheltenham he settled in London, on the recommendation of Douglas Jerrold, and contributed to the Athenaeum and Daily News.
His series of paper “The Literature of the Lower Orders" in the last-named journal, and a further series, “London Prisons, ” were widely noticed. In 1849 appeared his work "John Howard and the Prison World of Europe", which proved a great popular success. These were followed by a Life of William Penn (1851), in which he replied to Macaulay’s attack on Penn; Life of Blake (1852); and Personal History of Lord Bacon (1861), supplemented by The Story of Lord Bacon’s Life (1862).
From 1853 to 1869 he was editor of the Athenaeum. In 1863 he visited the East, and on his return helped to found the Palestine Exploration Fund, and published in 1865 "The Holy Land". In 1866 he travelled through the United States, publishing, in 1867, his "New America", and, the following year, "Spiritual Wives", two supplementary volumes. In the autumn of 1867 he journeyed through the Baltic Provinces, publishing an account of his trip in Free Russia (1870). In 1871 he was in Switzerland, and in 1872 in Spain, where he wrote the greater part of his "History of Two Queens". In 1874 he revisited the United States, giving the impressions of his tour in The White Conquest (1875). His other works, besides some fiction, were "British Cyprus" (1879) and "Royal Windsor".
