Doughty, William Ellison was born on February 2, 1873 in Jeffersonville, Sullivan County, New York, United States. Son of Elisha Cullen and Roxanna (Keesler) Doughty.


Graduate Cortland (New York) State Normal School, 1897. Bachelor of Arts, Syracuse University, 1904, Doctor of Divinity, 1918.


Ordained Methodist ministry, 1903. Pastor Syracuse, New York, 1903-1905, Phelps, New York, 1905-1906. Field secretary Young People’s Missionary Department Methodist Church, 1906-1910.

Secretary Laymen’s Missionary Movement of the United States and Canada, 1910-1918. Editor Men and Missions, 1911-1917. Leader of men’s convs. for years including 30 cities in nat. missionary campaign, 1915-1916.

Executive consultant Methodist Missionary Centenary and executive chairman Spiritual Resources. Associate general secretary Interchurch World Movement and director Spiritual Resources Department, 1919-1920. Associate general secretary Near East Relief, 1920-1929.

Nat. field administrator Near East Foundation, 1930-1936, national counsellor, same, since 1938. Knighted by King George, II, of Greece, Grand Commander Order of the Phoenix, 1937. Recipient four distinguished service awards.

Near East Relief medal. Near East Foundation 25 year award. And others. Director American Committee of Colleges in India, 1937.
