Studied at The City of London School. Royal School of Mines. St. John’s College, Cambridge.
Whitworth Scholar (first), 1869. Bracketed 5th Wrangler, 1873.
Fellow, St. John’s College, Cambridge, 1874-1879. Honourable Doctor of Civil Law Durham. Honourable Member of North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers.
After taking degree in 1873, became first Demonstrator of Physics in the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, under Professor James Clerk Maxwell. Was subsequently Lecturer on Physics in St. John’s College, and on Mechanics and Physics in Newnham College. Professor of Mathematics, Physics, and Mechanics in University College Nottingham, 1882.
Principal and Professor of Mathematics in the Durham College of Science, Newcastle-uponTyne, 1884. Member of Executive Council, and chairman of Electric Lighting Committee of Royal Jubilee Exhibition in Newcastle, 1887, superintended the lighting and electric power installations. Assisted in planning and erecting the buildings of Durham College of Science.
Secretary and Educational Adviser to the Technical Education Board, 1893-1004. Educational Adviser to the London County Council since 1904; one of His (or Her) Majesty Commissioners for the 1851 Exhibition.
