He acquired a technical education at Pratt Institute and studied architecture at the Brooklyn Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He established a professional practice in the city in 1900, and continued active throughout a long career.
In the years betweeen 1923 and 1937 during which Mr. Gompert served as Architect for the City Board of Education, he was identified with the planning and/or erection of the DeWitt Clinton High School, the Theodore Roosevelt High and Teachers’ Training College, also designed grade and high schools outside of New York. Various other buildings were included in the scope of his work, among which should be mentioned the Pullman Building; Cuyler Building erected prior to 1912 at 119-23 West 31st Street; Hotel Embassy at 70th Street and Broadway; the U. S. Marine Hospital at Stapleton, Long Island, Lincoln Baths at Saratoga Springs, and the first Health Center in New York.
He was an active member and past president of the Brooklyn Chapter, A. I. A. and after 1930 was affiliated with the New York Chapter, A. I. A. He was also a member of the Architectural League of New York, the Beaux Arts Institute of Design and other pro¬fessional organizations.
Mr. Gompert was unmarried.
