The first atomic bombs were constructed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where lab workers disposed of waste plutonium in nearby canyons leading to the Rio Grande. Since the initial publication in 1988 of Fluvial Processes in Dryland Rivers, the book was and is foundational in synthesizing river processes and forms in drylands - the semiarid, arid and extremely arid portions of the earth's surface. It describes the present understanding of dryland rivers, using a theoretical framework with examples and results of research from many areas of the world. The most important feature of the book is that it presents the first organized review of knowledge about dryland rivers. Information on practical management and planning is also included. The book is unique in that it stresses the philosophical and methodological aspects of geomorphologic research, rather than merely reporting results. Scientists use the book as a review of the literature and as a review of the intellectual development of the field. Planners and decision makers in dryland regions use the book as an entry to the science of geomorphology as applied to dryland environments. Graf received his education at University of Wisconsin in Madison. He recieved Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969, Master of Science degree in 1971 and his doctorate in 1974.
Graf started his career as a teaching assistant in the Department of Geography at University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1969. In 1971 he became an Intelligence Officer (Captain) with U.S. Air Forces in Denver. After 1974 he went to University of Iowa, where he worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Geography and was also a research associate of the Institute of Urban and Regional Research there. For a long period of time (since 1978 till 2001) he held the position of an associate professor at Arizona State University.
Since 2001, Graf started working as a professor of geography at University of South Carolina. In 2010, he was promoted to interim associate dean for research of College of Arts and Sciences at University of South Carolina, and since 2011, he works as a senior river scientist and foundation university professor emeritus there.
Graf is known for fluvial geomorphology and policy for public land and water, with emphasis on river channel change, human impacts on river processes and morphology, contaminant transport and storage in river sediments, and the downstream impacts of large dams. Much of his work has focused on dryland rivers, though for the past several years his work has been national in scale.
In the area of public policy he has emphasized the interaction of science and decision-making, and resolution of the conflict between economic development and environmental preservation. His work has been funded by 61 grants and contracts from federal, state, and local agencies, ranging from the National Science Foundation, National Geographic Society, U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Los Alamos National Laboratory, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to cities, tribes, and private companies. He has given more than 140 professional presentations and published more than 150 papers, articles, book chapters, and reports on geomorphology, riparian ecology, river management, and the interaction between science and public policy.
His 7 authored or edited books include Geomorphic Systems of North America, The Colorado River: Basin Stability and Management, Fluvial Processes in Dryland Rivers, Wilderness Preservation and the Sagebrush Rebellions, and Plutonium and the Rio Grande, and chaired committees who wrote New Strategies for America's Watersheds, Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River, Hydrology, Ecology, and Fishes of the Klamath River Basin, and the second biennial report to Congress of the Committee on Independent Science Review of Everglades Restoration Progress. He has been member of committees that have produced an additional 8 books.
