GURR, William was born on August 11, 1848 in Launceston, Tasmania. Son of William and Mary E. Gurr of England, early settlers, first in Portland, Victoria, and subsequently in Tasmania.
Studied at Reverend C. Price’s Grammar School, Launceston. Started business as draper in Launceston, then employed at Bright and Hitchcocks, leading drapers and outfitters, Geelong, Victoria.
Afterwards entered into business for himself as draper, and subsequently as auctioneer. Elected town councillor, Geelong, 1885, and member of Legislative Assembly, Victoria, 1894. Became Postmaster-General and Minister of Public Instruction in the Peacock Government, November 1900, and when Postal Department was handed over to Australian Commonwealth, remained as Minister of Public Instruction.
