Hawkins received a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical and biomedical engineering from Duke University in 1976.

He also earned an Master of Business Administration from University of Virginia"s Darden School of Business in 1982. Following his graduation from Duke, Hawkins began his medical technology career with Carolina Medical Electronics in 1977. Prior to joining Medtronic in 2002, Hawkins was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Novoste from 1998 to 2002.
Hawkins is a member of the Board of Visitors of Duke"s engineering school.
