He was educated privately and became a storekeeper at Richmond.
Career
He formed the Richmond Volunteer Rifles as a lieutenant in 1870, becoming a captain in 1871, a lieutenant colonel in 1881 and a colonel in 1896. A Richmond alderman, he was mayor from 1872 to 1876. In 1880 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Argyle.
A Free Trader, he held his seat until his retirement in 1894.
In 1899 he was appointed to the Legislative Council, where he remained until his death at Croydon in 1917.
