Excerpt from An Essay on the Life and Writings of Mr. Abraham Booth: Late Pastor of the Baptist Church in Little Goodman's Fields, London The following pages have been compiled from such materials as the writer has been supplied with, by some personal knowledge of Mr. Booth, an intimate acquaintance with his writings, and the additional information collected from his surviving friends. To Dr. Rippon's Memoir, he also confesses himself under considerable obligations. He is fully sensible of the disadvantages he has laboured under, not only in consequence of. his remote residence from the Metropolis, but also from the inadequacy of his talents, to do justice to the task which has been imposed upon him. The only merit he claims is that of impartiality. Having never had any religious connection with Mr. Booth, or with any society belonging to the denomination of English Baptists, his pen has not moved at the impulse of party zeal; and if he have spoken favourably of the character which he undertook to delineate, he wishes the reader to understand, that what he has said is the award of an unbiassed and disinterested mind. Born at Gresford, the son of William and Mary Jones, he was brought up at Poulton, Cheshire.
He started work as an apprentice in Chester in 1780, and encountered a Baptist congregation there. In 1782-1783 he moved to London, where he was in the congregation of Abraham Booth, returning to Chester after about a year. Jones fell under the influence of Archibald McLean, who preached in Chester for some weeks in autumn 1786, and was baptised by him.
At this period he held religious meetings in his home, also perhaps attending those of Samuel Medley.
In the late 1790s McLean set up a Liverpool congregation in Lord Street, with John Richard Jones of Ramoth. William Jones was an elder of this church.
In 1812 Jones moved to London, working as a bookseller. He was minister, or elder (sources differ) of the church in Windmill Street, Finsbury, for the rest of his life.
By the late 1820s, suffering financial troubles, Jones was taking on work writing books for Thomas Tegg.
lieutenant was the American art student Peyton C. Wyeth who formed Jones"s contact with Alexander Campbell in the mid-1830s. Jones married Maria or Elizabeth Crane, daughter of Thomas Crane of his congregation in Chester, in 1786.
