(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from Modern French Readings HE leading object of...)
Excerpt from Modern French Readings HE leading object of this volume is to furnish the student with progressive materials for becoming acquainted with the current language of France, under the influences that are giving it a new phase of development. To that end the selections have been made with reference to style and vocabulary, rather than to the history of the literature, so as to enable the reader to acquire experience in the popular, social, every-day terms and idioms that characterize the writings of the French to - day. Another end in view, though somewhat more local in its origin, is to facilitate a wider range of reading to our own students than was practicable where - a large number of foreign and expensive volumes were required, of which only a limited portion of each was available. The present excerpts are intended to embrace a year's study, beginning with what is easy, and gradually advancing to the more difficult styles of Daudet and Victor Hugo. It is charitably believed, however, that what is desirable for our young gentlemen here, will be acceptable to other schools of learning, and in this confidence the book has been prepared. William Ireland Knapp, the son of the Reverend Henry R. Knapp and of Mary (Centre) Knapp, was born on March 10, 1835 in Greenport, New York, United States, where his father was pastor of the Baptist church.
William was prepared for college at the Grammar School, later known as Colgate Academy. He graduated from Colgate University with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1860 and took the degree of Master of Arts in 1862.
From 1860 to 1865, Knapp was professor of French and German at Colgate University. He left Colgate to become professor of ancient and modern languages in Vassar Female College (1865 - 1867), where he was long remembered as "a very brilliant linguist strikingly handsome, " with a "delightful personality. " These traits are constantly mentioned by those who knew him at various periods of his career.
In 1867 he resigned his professorship and went to Europe, where he spent the next eleven years, chiefly in Spain, doing important research in Spanish literature of the sixteenth century. His editions of the works of Juan Boscan (Madrid, 1875) and the poems of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza (2 vols. , Madrid, 1876, 1877) won him the official recognition of the Spanish government. Upon his return to the United States in 1879 he joined the faculty of Yale University as "temporary instructor" in French and Spanish, and in June 1880 received an appointment to a permanent chair, becoming Street Professor of Modern Languages. He remained at Yale until June 1892, when he resigned to follow his colleague, William Rainey Harper, to the newly founded University of Chicago, where he became the first professor of Romance languages and literature. In 1895, Knapp withdrew permanently from teaching and settled in Europe again in order to devote his entire time to literary pursuits. He spent the last years of his life in Paris.
Knapp was an able and versatile teacher of Romance languages as well as a scholar. Besides the works mentioned, he published grammars and elementary textbooks for the study of French and Spanish. His literary reputation rests chiefly, however, upon his famous biography of George Borrow and his editions of Borrow's works. The first manifestation of a special interest in this talented wanderer he gave in a nine-page article published in The Chautauquan, November 1887. During the next twelve years, "with patient industry he collected a perfect mountain of material. . He lived where Borrow lived; he followed Borrow's footsteps in England as in Spain he tracked the most notable of Borrow's schoolfellows, he [drew] a ground-plan of the Borrow house at Norwich". The keenly awaited larger study, in two volumes, Life, Writings and Correspondence of George Borrow, was published in London (J. Murray) in 1899, and was followed, in 1900, by the promised editions of Borrow's Lavengro and The Romany Rye. Shortly after the publication of the Life, Writings and Correspondence, a collection of Borrow's letters, which Knapp had believed lost, was discovered in the crypt of the Bible House. While it is regrettable that he did not have access to these documents, which would have made his work complete, due credit must be granted him for having produced the first scholarly and authoritative biography of George Borrow.
