He received an architectural training in offices in Birmingham, Ala., and Chicago. Moving to Portland in 1895, he established practice under his own name and during the next few years designed the Seward Hotel, Tilford Building, a branch building for the Crane Company, and Administration Building at the University of Oregon. Appointed architect of the Oregon State Board of Control in 1912, Mr. Knighton continued in that office three years during which he was responsible for plans of the Eastern Oregon State Hospital, the State Training School and the Supreme Court Building.
Associated in partnership with Leslie D. Howell during the last phase of his career, his most important works were the Grant High School at Portland: State Office Building, Salem; Pythian Home, Vancouver, Wash.; Junior and Senior High Schools at Salem, Ore., and Nurses’ Home at the County Hospital in Portland.
