Member of Legislative Council Victoria, for South - Eastern Province, for four years. Member of the Victorian Royal Commission on Local Government, 1902, and of the Federal Royal Commission of Navigation, 1904-1905. Was a 'founder of the Victorian Chamber of Mines and ex-President.
A Director of the Bank of Victoria, the Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company, and other companies. He co-operated in the formation of the two large mining companies named. Has for many years been a consistent advocate for, and supporter of the Rifle Club movement, and the establishment of a complete cadet system.
Was one of five who formed the first golf club in Australia, now known as the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Is M.Am.I.M.E. and M.A.I.M.E. Owns Ranfurlie and Braemar estates.
President of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, 1904-1906, having been appointed three times in succession. President, General Council of the Chambers of Commerce, 1905-1906, 1906-1907, and 1909-1910. Member of Parliament Kooyong Division, Victoria, Federal House of Representatives, since 1901; member of firm of Knox, Schlapp, and Company, mine-owners and engineers.
