He was awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism on April 30, 1863, while serving as a Captain with Company C, 6th New York Cavalry, at Chancellorsville, Virginia. He died at the age of 65, on February 25, 1903 and was buried at the Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers, New New York
His Medal of Honor was issued on March 30, 1898. The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain William Laing Heermance, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 30 April 1863, while serving with Company C, 6th New York Cavalry, in action at Chancellorsville, Virginia.
