Career
Among his best known roles are the mail carrier in On Golden Pond and Chester, the mayor, in Newhart. He was born in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. His first television appearance was in 1954 in an episode of Goodyear Playhouse.
He later appeared in over eighty different television shows, among them The Donna Reed Show, The Ghost and Mistress
Muir,The Andy Griffith Show, Here"s Lucy, Number Soap, Radio, and Amen. He also appeared in the movies Cold Steel, Hotel, Sex and the Single Girl, The Honeymoon Machine and Li"l Abner.
