William Farnsworth Loomis was born on the 11th of August 1914 in Massachusetts, United States; the son of Alfred Lee and Ellen (Farnsworth) Loomis.

In 1932 William graduated from St. Paul’s School, 1932. He received a degree of Bachelor of Science from Harvard University in 1936 and Doctor of Medicine in 1941.
From 1941-1942 William was an Intern medicine at New York Hospital. From 1942-1943 he worked at Civilian Office of Scientific Research and Development. W. Loomis served to major Army of the United States,1943-1945. He was a National Research Council fellow of medical science at Columbia College Physical & Surgical (nowadays Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons), 1945-1946. Also W. Loomis was a Senior fellow of American Cancer Society at Massachusetts General Hospital, 1946-1947. From 1948-1949 he worked as an Assistant professor of biology at Massachusetts Institute Technology.
Also W. Loomis held a position of the Assistant director in Natural Science department at Rockefeller Foundation, 1949-1952. He was an Executive secretary of commission at Rockefeller Institute, 1952. From 1952-1964 he served as a Director at Loomis Laboratory, Greenwich, Connecticut. From 1964-1971 W. Loomis was a Rosenfield professor of biochemistry at Brandeis University.
He was a member of American Society of Biological Chemists, Harvey Society, American Society of Zoologists, Society of Study Development and Growth and Royal Society of Medicine.
William was married to Frances Whitman on the 1st of October 1965 and had 7 children.
