Career
He was a Scottish born and educated marine ecologist who moved permanently to South Africa in 1948. Most of his research was performed while on staff at the University of the Witwatersrand. Species named in honor of this malacologist include:
Elysia macnaei Marcus, Ev., 1982 - a sacoglossan sea slug
Symsagittifera macnaei (Marcus, Ev, 1957) - an acoel flatworm
