Studied at Fettes College, Edinburgh. Edinburgh, Tubingen, and Leipzig Universities.
Served in India and Gibraltar, and at the War Office as Deputy Assistant Director-General of the Army Medical Service, and as a member of the Advisory Board for Medical services and of the Army Sanitary Committee. Was in medical charge of Sir C. Euan Smith’s Mission to Fez, 1892, and of Sir A. Nicolson’s Mission to Morocco City, 1896. Represented War Office at several International Conferences.
Honourable Secretary of Central British Red Cross Committee from formation till 1902. On special duty South Africa, 1902-1903. Senior Medical Officer, N. China Command, and attached to Japanese Army in the Field, Russo-Japanese War, 1904-1905.
One of the British Plenipotentiaries at the Conference for the Revision of the Geneva Convention, 1906. Attached to General Staff, Headquarters, 1906-1910. Master of Arts, Bachelor of Medicine of Edinburgh 1322 University.
Diploma in Public Health of Cambridge University. Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, Knight of Grace, Order of St.John of Jerusalem. 3rd Class Sacred Treasure of Japan.
Japanese Red Cross Society’s medal for meritorious services, and Japanese war medal. Army Medical Service, Principal Medical Officer, Malta Command.
