Established the system of 8 hours’ day at Salford Iron Works in 1893, and has since continued the system. Has been engaged in promoting technical education for many years. Chairman of Froebel Educational Institute of London.
Chairman of British Education Section of Franco-British Exhibition, 1908. Was member of the Committee appointed by the Minister of War in 1901 to report on the reorganisation of the W7ar Office. A Liberal; Member of Parliament S. Div. of Salford, 1885-1886.
