Excerpt from Good Ministers of Jesus Christ For more than a generation I have been reading the Yale Lectures as the successive volumes have appeared, reading them with an ever-growing profit and interest. On my way to be a student in the School of Theology I car ried with me to read on the train the lectures of both Brooks and Simpson, then recently pub lished. Through the years since then these and other volumes have helped to keep my ideals fresh, my standards from sagging, and my vision of the ministry clear and attractive be fore my own eyes. For twenty-five years I have been out of the pastorate, in positions which by their very nature tend to make a person official and administrative in hls atti tude and spirit. These lines, perhaps all too personal for such a place, are intended to sug gest what they cannot express, an undying and increasing gratitude to the men and the in fluences that have helped to preserve for me, in my ministry through the years, the vision splendid. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Excerpt from The Picket Line of Missions: Sketches of the Advanced Guard WE here present for our Reading Course a book which we trust will inspire the hearts of all Epworthians with a freshened enthu siasm for Christian missions. Nothing seemed more likely to effect this than to bring our young people into close touch with the hearts and life work of a select number of our noble missionaries, some sainted, others still living. While some of the characters here sketched are not as famil iar as others that might have been chosen, yet each, one is truly heroic, and the writers were well fitted for their task, all by genuine sympathy, and some by long and intimate acquaintance with, their subjects. We are sure that the book will well repay a careful reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from In the School of Christ The preparation of this volume has brought me anew for many months into the New Testament with its wonderful story of Jesus Christ and His disciples, and into many volumes interpretative of this perpetual rec ord. This experience has been an unspeak able privilege in the midst of a life in which administrative cares tend constantly to absorb all energies. And the experience has created anew a joy and high-heartedness in thinking Of the ministry itself, even in a day in which it is thought that the ministry of Jesus Christ has lost much of its attractiveness. (Excerpt from The Right Sort of Men for the Ministry The ...)
Excerpt from The Right Sort of Men for the Ministry The kind of men required for the ministry of to day is determined by several capital considerations. What a strong man should do With his one life should always be decided on the basis of such considerations. The ministry must appeal to men at their best; their choices must be made at the highest and deepest levels of principle and life. Otherwise, manhood does not get its chance and the ministry misses that manhood Which it must have. The ministry does not and can not make its appeal on the basis of its need. It can hot demand strong men just because it has none; but must base its claim on fundamental and commanding principles. The best men must come in With their heads up and remain with a royal high-heartedness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. William Fraser McDowell was born on February 4, 1858 in Millersburg, Ohio, and was the second in a family of three sons of David Allison McDowell, a well-to-do merchant, and Rebecca (Fraser) McDowell.
After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University he studied for the ministry at Boston University, receiving the S. T. B. degree in 1882. During his student days he heard the great preachers of the times: Thomas DeWitt Talmage, Henry Ward Beecher, and especially Phillips Brooks, to whom he listened more than a hundred times. He received honorary degrees from Wesleyan (1903), Northwestern (1904), Denver (1914), Vermont (1914), and American University (1934).
McDowell was ordained in 1882. After serving pastorates in Lodi, Oberlin, and Tiffin, Ohio (1882 - 90), McDowell became chancellor of the Methodist-affiliated University of Denver, a position he held for nine years. During this time he received from his alma mater, Ohio Wesleyan, the degree of Ph. D. (1893) and an honorary D. D. degree (1894). In 1899 he was appointed corresponding secretary of the board of education of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1904 he was elected a bishop, serving in Chicago until 1916 and in Washington, D. C. , from that time till his retirement in 1932.
Few preachers have equaled his appeal to students, and he was in constant demand both as a preacher and as a lecturer in the great universities. An ecclesiastical statesman, McDowell was able to reconcile differences and to center upon major objectives. His rare gift of evolving creative and constructive compromises was revealed in his leadership of the movement to reunite the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and the Methodist Protestant Church. He served as chairman of the Methodist Episcopal section of that endeavor and lived to see the plan of union adopted by the General Conference of his own church in 1936, though not the ultimate reunion of Methodism in 1939. He died of a heart attack in the spring of 1937 at his home in Washington and was buried in Delaware, Ohio.

( About the Book Teaching methods comprise the principles...)
Endowed with extraordinary oratorical ability, McDowell was a noted preacher whose sermons have been characterized as "classics of the modern pulpit. " His addresses were intellectually stimulating and emotionally moving, designed to build up spiritual reserves and to command action.
Tall, well-proportioned, athletically built and an outdoor man, Bishop McDowell was a striking personality. His handsome, mobile face, flashing eyes, and evident love of humanity attracted immediate attention and made him the center of any group he entered. His friendships included men and women in every walk of life. During his years in Washington his wisdom, rigorous respect for confidences, excellent sense of humor, and worldwide influence won the friendship of presidents and other leading statesmen. Lacking, as he once wrote, "the temperament of the traditional reformer, " he sought to effect fundamental reform by releasing spiritual power through personality rather than by marching in the vanguard of social movements. The one exception was his acceptance of the presidency of the Board of Temperance, Prohibition, and Public Morals of the Methodist Episcopal Church during the active days of the prohibition movement, a position he held from 1916 to 1932.
On September 20, 1882 McDowell married Clotilda Lyon, by whom he had one child, a daughter, Olive V. Mrs. McDowell later served as president of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church; the architecturally famous chapel at Isabella Thoburn College in Lucknow, India, was named in her honor.
