He was educated in York County, then in Peel County, at the Rockwood Academy and at an academy in Owen Sound.
He served as mayor of North Bay from 1892 to 1893 and from 1903 to 1904. McKenzie then taught school in Dufferin and Grey counties for ten years. In 1887, he came to North Bay.
He became a grocer and then opened a furniture store.
McKenzie was a collector of customs for North Bay, Sudbury, Sturgeon Falls and Cobalt. McKenzie served five years on North Bay council.
McKenzie died in North Bay at the age of 64.
