William Daniel Mundell was born on December 30, 1912, in Newfane, Vermont, United States.
Early in his career, Mundell worked as a self-employed carpenter and mason in Vermont from 1936 to 1954. He took time away from his work to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. In 1954 he began fifteen years as maintenance foreman with the Vermont Highway Department.
In 1969 Mundell became associate editor of Poet Lore. Other career posts included photographer, real estate developer, and auditor. He also served on the board of trustees of Moore Free Library and served as teacher/poet-in-residence at the Cooper Hill Writers Conference.
