Born in Rutherglen, Scotland, he emigrated to the United States in 1842 with his father and settled in Jamestown, Wisconsin Territory in 1843. Nelson was an editor and publisher. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
In 1865,Nelson moved to Viroqua, Wisconsin.
In 1871, Nelson served as president of the Village of Viroqua. Then, in 1872 and 1873, Nelson served in the Wisconsin State Senate as a Republican.
Served in Company I, 10th Wisconsin Infantry, October 14, 1861-June 7, 1865. Member Wisconsin Senate, 1872-1873. Member Board of Education, Salt Lake City, 1891-1895 (president 1894-1895).
Married Mary East. Fretwell, August 22, 1866.
