Skye (the Misty Isle) is the largest of the many beautiful islands lying off the west coast of Scotland and is part of Iverness-shire. It has an area of approximately 350, 000 acres, is fifty miles long from North to Suuth, and from seven to twenty-five miles broad. Every part of it is isolated from another by bens, glens, burns, and winding sea lochs; the latter being responsible for its extensive coastline which measures hundreds of miles and is out of all proportion to its small area. No point on the island is more than five miles from the sea. Everything you want to know about Skye Island is in this book!

William Poucher was born on November 22, 1891, in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, the United Kingdom.
William Poucher served as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps for five years during World War I, then was chief perfumer to Yardley for thirty years. Known as "the father of British perfumery," his three-volume textbook Perfumes, Cosmetics and Soaps is the industry's bible.
William Poucher was also a prolific landscape photographer, having amassed some 20,000 black-and-white and 5,000 color photographs. His views of mountain scenery - in the Rockies, Alps, Dolomites, Snowdonia, Lake and Peak districts, Scottish Highlands, Cairngorms, Coolins, and the Isle of Skye - have been popular images in books and magazines for forty years. He personally explored and photographed all the routes he describes in his famous mountain guides so that users can be assured of correct directions. His guides were based on earlier books covering most of the mountainous regions of Britain, but exclude routes on less popular mountains such as the Berwyns, and are restricted in areas such as the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons.
