The young man received a technical education at Queens College, Cambridge.
In 1912 he migrated to the U. S„ shortly after established a residence in Los Angeles, and in 1915 began practice with Architect William Dodd in a partnership that was continued until the latter s death in 1930.
One of the leading firms in Los Angeles for several years, Dodd & Richards carried on a large and successful practice, specializing in commercial work. Noted examples of the firm's work include Coulter s old Department Store on Broadway, and later new stores erected on West 7th Street, such as the Ville de Paris, the Brack Shops, Brock’s Jewelry store, and a new front and remodeled interior for the J. W. Robinson Department store. In addition the partners planned an addition to the Pacific Mutual Building, c.1920; Associated Realty Building, 150 West 6th Street; Hollywood Branch Library on Ivar Street at Hollywood Blvd., later moved to a new location south on lvar, and the Boyle Heights Branch Library, built in 1917.
Following the death of his partner in 1930, Mr. Richards carried on his work alone in the same office the firm had occupied in the Architects Building on West 5th Street. During that period he designed the six-story Security Bank Building in Glendale; Medical Building in Los Angeles on Sixth Street at Lucas, and the Professional Building in Pasadena.
