In 1976, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Guelph.

In 1957, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for the riding of Middlesex North. From 1960 to 1961, he was a Minister Without Portfolio. From 1961 to 1975, he was the Minister of Agriculture.
In 1983, he was appointed the fourth chancellor of the University of Guelph.
He was elected to the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1988. William Atcheson Stewart"s parents were George Atcheson Stewart (b 14 December 1868) and Fanny Ann Langford (5 July 1872 - 26 January 1932) of 16th Concession, London, Middlesex Company, Ontario.
George, was the son of William Atcheson Stewart (20 April 1834-1817 February 1909) and Margaret Lannin Hays (b 27 September 1838). George"s grandfather, David Stewart, (b c1807) was the son of Hugh Stewart and Ann Kilpatrick of County Armagh, Ireland.
Their marriage took place in Bastard, Leeds Company, Ontario.
A member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, he was re-elected in 1959, 1963, 1967, and 1971.
