Career
At the age of 18, he enlisted in the 9th Indiana Cavalry to fight in the Civil War. During his three years of service he took part in the battles of Spring Hill, Nashville, and Franklin, and traveled as far as south as Mississippi In May, 1865, Wheeler was discharged from the Army and later moved back to Indianapolis in 1866 where he became a wagon delivery driver for the Layman-Carey Hardware Company.
