William White was born in England.
At age 12 he was apprenticed to a cabinetmaker for nine years. After graduating from high school, he taught school, and studied law.
He purchased his contract after six years. In 1846 he was admitted to the bar, and elected Prosecuting Attorney of Clark County, Ohio in 1847, and re-elected three times. In 1856 White was elected Common Pleas Judge, and re-elected in 1861.
When Hocking H. Hunter resigned February 9, 1864 from the Ohio Supreme Court, he was appointed to the seat the next day.
In 1883, President Arthur appointed White to judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. He was confirmed by the United States Senate, but died before resigning and taking the oath of office.
He died March 12, 1883 at Springfield. He was buried in Ferncliff Cemetery.
