Entered Civil Service as clerk in the General Post Office, 1846 (resigned 1854). Appointed to Civil Service of Canada as clerk in Post Office Department, 1854. Secretary of Canadian Post Office, January 1861.

Entered Canadian Militia 1861: served during Fenian raid, 1866 (medal and clasp, and Volunteer Officers" Decoration). Captain Governor-General’s Foot Guards, 1870.
