Born into an ecclesiastical family on 8 September 1904, he was educated at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario and ordained in 1927.
After a curacy at Street George’s, Toronto he was then the Incumbent at Street James’, Tweed. In 1941 he became Dean of Street Luke’s Cathedral, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. In 1944 he became Bishop of Algoma and in 1955 he also became Metropolitan of Ontario, posts he held until 1974.
He died on 19 January 1990.
