Shunk, William Alexander was born on December 23, 1857 in Westville, Indiana, United States. Son of Francis Rawn and Cannarissa (Logan) Shunk.
Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1879. Honor graduate Infantry and Cavalry School, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1887. Graduated from Army War College, Washington, District of Columbia, 1912.
