Shunk, William Alexander was born on December 23, 1857 in Westville, Indiana, United States. Son of Francis Rawn and Cannarissa (Logan) Shunk.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1879. Honor graduate Infantry and Cavalry School, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, 1887. Graduated from Army War College, Washington, District of Columbia, 1912.

Career

Commissioned Second lieutenant 8th Cavalry, June 13, 1879. First lieutenant, July 23, 1885. Captain, October 5, 1892.

Major engineer officer vols., May 19, 1898. Honorary discharge vols., March 13, 1899. Major 34th Vol. Infantry, July 5, 1899.

Honorary mustered out vols., April 17, 1901. Major United States Army, June 28, 1902. Lieutenant colonel 1st Cavalry, November 20, 1908.

Colonel, August 2, 1912. Assigned to 15th Cavalry, August 15, 1915.
