Professor Stanley Hirshons New York Times review said, Massacre at Mountain Meadows must rank as one of the half dozen boldest and most important books ever written on the Mormons. As an eloquent, moving document, it stands virtually aloneAs a study of human motives and mans brutality, in the name of God, to other men, it is frightening.

(The first reign of Tutankhamen, as Pharaoh of Egypt, last...)
The first reign of Tutankhamen, as Pharaoh of Egypt, lasted just seven years. Crowned Pharaoh at age ten, he was dead at eighteen. Then, three thousand years later, Tutankhamen reigned over the hopes of twentieth century archaeologists. The Valley of the Kings had been plundered for thirty centuries and stripped of most artifacts. But some Egyptologists suspected that one tomb, that of Tutankhamen, had not yet been discovered. Howard Carter waited twelve years for permission to search the Valley, then hunted for another seven years, before he stunned the world with the greatest find any Egyptologist has ever made.

( Though his life begins "in a commonplace way," Christop...)
Though his life begins "in a commonplace way," Christopher Mouse is not the least bit common. Born in an ordinary wire cage, he endures various young owners who range from bad to worse before narrowly escaping death by taxidermy. His adventures continue in the Metropolitan Museum of Art as he encounters a large cat in the Egyptian room. Throughout his journeys, Christopher proves an adventurer of the most intrepid sort-and a budding poet as well. With the delightful feel of a lost (and found) classic, this is the story of an extraordinary mouse who, through strong will and good luck, finds his own small way in a very large world.

Childrens early reader. Great story! Mike and Sally are upset when their classmates ridicule them for wearing glasses. But when their favorite cowboy hero comes to town and performs tricks with specs on, they are thoroughly heartened. Hero worship when directed toward a positive goal can be a virtually instructive tool. In this case the other children re-evaluate their feelings about a common "handicap", but more important, the stigma attached to wearing glasses is thoroughly eradicated in the minds of Mike and Sally. A See and Read book.

(Set during the Great London Plague of 1665, this page-tur...)
Set during the Great London Plague of 1665, this page-turner of a novel will keep readers riveted. Nell Bullen lives in a spacious manor home just outside the village of Branford. And it is from here that she observes the death and devastation when the plague arrives in the village. Having been to London, where hundreds have already died, Nell knows what's coming. But even she cannot imagine the bravery with which the villagers act. To avoid spreading the loathsome disease beyond Branford, the people create a "Circle of Death"--no one is allowed to enter or leave the town. And every day, with the plague at its highest point, the church bell tolls for yet another villager. Author William Wise was inspired to write this extraordinary novel by a New York Times article about the village of Eyam, the real town upon which Branford is based. To this day, villagers of Eyam celebrate the courage of their ancestors.

IN vg shape - but, ex-library. Intended for Jr. High students - but of interest to historians. This is a little known incident that is often commented upon but no resources were easily found - at least prior to I-net days. A stong fact-based partially fictionalized (very minor) account.

(Myer Myers won fame as an early American artist and as a ...)
Myer Myers won fame as an early American artist and as a patriot. His life was filled with battles with himself and for the freedom that was so important to him and to his people. He was thirteen in 1736, the oldest son of Solomon and Judith Myers who had come from Holland, two of the earliest Jewish settlers in the colony of New York. Solomon was a shopkeeper, but he wanted his sons to do whatever they thought best. Myer found that he wanted to be a silversmith, not easy in those days. His adventures and disappointments as a boy apprentice, his making of the beautiful silver Menorah - to be a symbol to him all his life- which saved him from being arrested by British troops as a spy during the Revolution are told with warmth and drama by Mr. Wise Eventually, Myer became a very prominent member and officer of the Sheath Israel Congregation, the first synagogue in New York. Many characters and exciting event are a part of this patriot's life, a life which shows, too, the story of New York as it changed from a busy seaport town to a commercial city, and America as it changed from a colony to a free nation.
