Blair, William Allen was born on June 4, 1859 in High Point, North Carolina, United States. Son of Solomon I. and Abigail P. (Hunt) Blair.


Bachelor of Arts, Haverford, 1881. Bachelor of Arts, Harvard, 1882. Johns Hopkins, 1885-1886.

Admitted to bar, 1894. A.M., Duke U. (formerly Trinity), North Carolina, 1889. LL. D., University of North Carolina, 1947.


Principal high schools and superintendent schools, High Point and Winston, North Carolina, 1885-1887. Lecturer on pedagogy, Swarthmore, 1886. Superintendent State Normal School, 1887-1889.

Was vice president, later president and Chairman of the Board People’s National Bank of Winston-Salem for over 40 years. President Midas Mines, Orange Crush Bottling Company, Gross Mining Company, etc. President State Board Charities and Public Welfare since 1904.

Editor The School-Teacher, 1887-1889. North Carolina commissioner to Paris Exposition, 1889. Vice president Sound Money League for North Carolina since 1896.

President North Carolina Bankers’ Association, 1898. Member Executive Committee and treasurer Conference for Education in the South. Member United States Assay Commission, 1905.

Chairman State Board, Allotments and Appeals. Trustee Peabody College for Teachers, 1909, Salem College, Winston Salem State Teachers College. Director Conference of Social Service since 1930.

Director General Research Council since 1931. Commissioner Sesquicentennial Battle of Guilford since 1931. Member of advisory committee National Conference Jews and Christians.

Member Council Yenching U., China. Vice president Court of Honor, Boy Scouts (received Silver Beaver award).
