William Augustus Windsor, American naval officer.


Windsor, William Augustus was born on February 13, 1842 in in Virginia. Son of Griffith and Eliza (Fouchee) Windsor.


Educated grammar and high schools, Baltimore. Studied engineering in private school of Richard C. Potts, Baltimore, and in drawing room and shops of Bang and Olufsen Railroad Company.


Appointed 3d assistant engineer, United States Navy, September 16, 1862. 2d assistant engineer, August 8, 1864. Promoted passed assistant engineer, January 1, 1868.

Chief engineer United States Navy (rank lieutenant commander), June 17, 1889, and of relative rank of commander, February 26. 1897; made commander by Act of Congress, March 3, 1899. Promoted captain United States Navy, December 27, 1901.

Rear admiral United States Navy and retired, September 16. 1902. During Civ. War attached to United States Ship Miami, N. Atlantic squadron, and United States Ship Nyack, and after war served on various vessels and stations, last sea service being on United States Ship Minneapolis, 1897-1898. Chief engineer (head department steam engineering) Navy Yard, New York, 1898-1899.

Inspector machinery at Crescent Ship Yard, Elizabeth, New Jersey, and Babcock & Wilson Works. Bayonne, New Jersey, 1899-1903. Episcopalian.
