By William Adair. Published by The American Institute of Architects Foundation, Washington D.C. An exhibition at The Octagon, Washington D.C. July 19- September 11, 1983. 50 pages. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. "This exhibition and catalog attempt to establish the picture frame as an artistic work worthy of consideration in its own right. Curators and collectors are recognizing increasingly that the frame is integral to the artistic material is accompanies. As elements of our material culture, frames reflect their time through style and technique. This survey is by no means complete. First, it tries to present a reasonably comprehensive visual inventory of identified and dated frames in America from the Colonial period to the late Victorian era,m providing, in addition, a brief look at symbols used in frame design. Second, it explains the various methods and materials associated with the production of frames. Understanding these techniques and materials assists in the proper identification and dating of frames. Style, except as an indication of date, is not examined in-depth. (MR)
