Professor of chemistry and metallurgy, University of Alabama, 1891-1893. Chemist, Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railway Company, Birmingham, 1894-1898. With Engineering and Mining Journal, and American Manufacturer, and Iron World, 1893 and 1897-1898.

Director University of Texas Mining Survey, 1901-1905, Bureau Economic Geology and Technology, University of Texas, 1909-1914. President Colorado School of Mines, 1914-1916. Removed to Houston, Texas.
