Appointed from Virginia, 3d assistant engineer United States Navy, February 1852. Promoted 2d assistant engineer, September, 1855. 1st assistant engineer, 1858.

Lieutenant chief engineer, 1861. Retired with rank of captain, March, 1892. Promoted to chief engineer with rank of rear admiral retired, by act of Congress, June 1896.
