Originally published in Russian as an eight-volume set, this four-volume English edition is a selection of articles from "The Soviet Military Encyclopedia". Chosen to aid Western scholars in understanding the history of the Russian armed forces as well as current developments in former Soviet Union, the work provides insights into the Soviet view of a variety of historical events and personalities throughout the world. The final volume provides a translated index of all the entries in the Russian original, indicating those which have been included in the English edition.
