This Kindle edition is a twenty first century republication of a flying textbook co-written by world aerobatic champion Beverly "Bevo" Howard and noted aviation author William Strohmeier after the end of World War II in 1947. The book is based on the direct experience gained from 329,332 hours of accident free primary flight training for the Army Air Corps at the Orangeburg, South Carolina flight training base established and run by Mr. Howard. Bevo Howard not only held the World Aerobatic Championship for the decade when he wrote this book, he won those championships flying stock Piper Cubs powered by engines producing only 50 to 65 horsepower. He continued to fly aerobatics for his entire life with the goal of demonstrating to audiences around the world the precision flight capabilities of aviation rather than it's danger and thrill factor. Bill Strohmeier began his long aviation career training pilots for action in WWII flying the radial engine Stearman biplanes at the Orangeburg base that introduced thousands of young pilots to their first experiences of flight. This textbook presents to new pilots the solid flying principals that are as valid today as they were over sixty years ago. At the same time, reading transports the reader back to the past with insights into what was involved in learning to fly in the mid 1940's... a time when flying was simpler ...and much cheaper. Navigation was accomplished by looking out of the cockpit, radios were expensive, rare and unreliable, a dollar bought you four and a half gallons of aviation fuel and a two place airplane could be bought for $2,000. The text includes clear and detailed illustrations as well as many photographs of 1940's general aviation aircraft. It is still possible and enjoyable today to fly simply. This textbook does an excellent job toward clearly understanding the important basics of flight and what is important when at the controls to keep you and your passengers safe and alive. As an extra bonus, the book includes an 8,000 word instructional article written by George B. Post, the Vice-President Edo Aircraft Corporation on how To Fly Float Planes covering every aspect of water flying such as "sailing" the plane when taxiing in windy conditions. The book's foreword was written by William T. Piper, founder of Piper Aircraft Corporation and designer of the world famous Piper Cub. Also included is detailed information on how it was possible to set up an airport and aviation business in post war America complete with costs of the time plus case histories outlining airport successes and failures. .
