Served for 22 years in active Militia, and since 1883 in permanent Militia. Saw active service during Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870 (medal with two clasps). North-West Rebellion of 1885 in command of the Battleford column (medal with one clasp).
Boer War of 1899-1900 (medal with four clasps). During latter, in command of first contingent from Canada (The Royal Canadian Regiment). Adjutant and Commandant, Canadian teams of 1873 and 1883, to Wimbledon.
