Father of Stanley and Cadwallader W. Became largely interested in flour manufacturing and lumber enterprises. For years interested in the Washburn & Crosby flouring mills. Stockholder and director in the Pillsbury-Washburn Company.
Originator and promoter, and president for many years, Minneapolis & St. Louis R.R. Also projector and builder Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie R.R., president until 1889.
Member Minnesota House of Representatives, 1869, 1871. Member 46th to 48th Congresses (1879-1885).
